Every Sunday during school term during the 09h30 service our children meet in the Wesley Centre for their very own Junior Church. We don’t call it “Sunday School” because it’s not like school at all – it’s a church service for young folk – Junior/Youth Church.
We start with an “open session” for all (except the teens who meet separately) which looks very much like “big church” with singing, prayers, an offertory and a celebration of our life together and of our great and wonderful God. Instead of one sermon for all, we then break into smaller groups for age appropriate learning instead. We know that 4 year olds learn very differently from 12 year olds and they are dealing with very different things in their lives. For the younger children we teach basic bible lessons and stories but with the older children we need to begin to teach life-skills – how to apply God’s teaching into our lives. We try to do this in a fun and active way, involving the young folk in the learning.
We don’t have teachers or experts in the field leading the groups – we have people who create an environment where God can do the teaching – we have facilitators. We are always looking out for more people to help facilitate the small group learning experience – anyone can do it. We also need folk to help practically, especially with the younger children who need help colouring in, gluing or cutting out and going to the toilet! – one facilitator simply can’t manage with 15 or more children!
At the moment we have the following groups and facilitators:
-
Ages 3-6 Amelia Vermeulen & Cindi Kotze
-
Gr.1 & 2 Vicki Hugo
-
Gr.3 & 4 Heidi Willmer
-
Gr.5 & 6 Melinda Lottering
-
Gr. 7 and up (Teens) Brian Lloyd & Nada Oosthuizen
If you are able to help out in any way please contact any of the above people or speak to Steven. We will provide everything necessary to help you. An extra hand or two per class would be great!
