4 - 5 year olds speak clearly and use more complex sentences. They can count ten or more objects, recognize some letters and possibly write their name. They can correctly name at least four colours and three shapes. They have a better understanding of the concept of time and the order of daily activities, for example, breakfast in the morning, lunch in the afternoon and dinner at night. They have a greater attention span. They know their address and phone number, if taught.

 

At this age, your child should be running, hopping, throwing and kicking balls, climbing and swinging with ease. Children learn through play, and that is what your 4 - 5 year old should be doing. Other milestones for this age group include doing a somersault and hop, walk up and down stairs without help, walk forwards and backwards easily, peddle a tricycle, draw a person with a body, copy a triangle, circle, square and other shapes, stack 10 or more blocks and use a fork and spoon. 4 – 5 year olds can dress and undress, brush teeth and take care of personal needs without much help. At this age, your 4 - 5 year old is beginning to understand about other people’s feelings. They enjoy playing with other children, sharing and taking turns, at least most of the time.

 

All children grow and develop at their own pace. Don’t worry if your child has not reached all of the age appropriate milestones at this time. You should notice a gradual progression in growth and development as your child gets older. If you don’t, or if your child has signs of possible development delay, speak to your child’s teacher or doctor.

Your child is growing up. During this age, children begin to develop greater independence, self-control and creativity. They are eager to try new things, play with their toys for longer periods of time and express their emotions better when they get frustrated. 4 - 5 year olds are curious and able to carry on a conversation. Their thought process and vocabulary grow. They can answer simple questions easily and logically. Most children at this age enjoy singing, rhyming and making up words. They are energetic, silly and at times noisy and boisterous.
