Stages of play...

  • Solitary play (up to 2 - 3 years)

Children play alone and take no notice of others around them. They will sometimes watch other children play. For example, a child playing happily on his own in the sandpit.

  • Parallel play (2 - 3 to 4 years)

Children will play mainly by themselves. They do, however, play alongside other children. For example, two children are both playing with blocks but each is building their own construction. During parallel play brief interaction may occur between children. They may talk to each other without actually playing together.

  • Social play (4 years and older)

Children begin to play with other children in small groups. They cooperate, share ideas and toys and interact with one another. For example, when playing house-house or having a tea party.
